Volunteer

The success of The Fan Dance is in great part owed to the commitment, skill and enthusiasm of our volunteers. Dedicated individuals are required to fill the following postings:

BASE CAMP TEAM

The base camp taskings are made up of both physical and administrational activities. You will be working with both Directing Staff and Base Camp staff. You should be friendly, organised, flexible, a good communicator and generally enjoy this sort of work. Please indicate which of these roles interests you.

  • *Registration/Check in
  • *Time keepers
  • *Base camp manager’s runner
  • *Race Director runner
  • *Arrival’s Ambassador
  • *Post march weigh station master
  • *Driver

MOUNTAIN TEAM

You will be directly assisting the SAS/ SBS Directing Staff in maintaining mountain safety for participants.

INTERMEDIATE CHECKPOINT STAFF:

Three positions are open to man intermediate checkpoints. These locations have been identified by Directing Staff as having a strong potential for participants to go off course or have features that are potentially dangerous or life threatening. Volunteers should be physically strong and fit with an ability to think independently. You should have navigational skills and be competent with a map and compass. You should ideally be familiar with the Fan Dance route. Intermediate checkpoint staff will be in direct radio/cell phone contact with Directing Staff manning the four main checkpoints, so you should be confident and have good communication skills. You will have a significant degree of control over all participants passing through your checkpoint so you must be able to maintain authority in a calm and professional manner as befitting of the standards set by Directing Staff. These postings can be solitary and isolated affairs so you should be of a strong mindset and happy in your own company.

SIGNALERS:

Where cell phone and radio communications are difficult DS will need to have messages relayed between checkpoints. Signalers will carry a cell or radio and be posted at a signal strong position between checkpoints. You will then be required to remain static at your designated location for the duration of the race so that you can pass messages between Directing Staff. Like the INTERMEDIATE CHECKPOINT STAFF you will be self sustained for the day so should show similar qualities.

DS RUNNER:

You will be working alongside DS manning the main RV/checkpoints. Directing Staff are looking for individuals with initiative and the ability to carry out tasks efficiently and with a sense of humour.

COURSE SWEEPER:

You will follow the last person from the start point to the finish, sweeping up any stragglers or reporting any potential difficulties en route.

MOUNTAIN TEAM:

Volunteers should ideally have military and/or significant outdoor/mountain experience.

If you are interested in working alongside us please tell us about yourself by contacting:

BASE CAMP TEAM: linda@avalancheenduranceevents.com

MOUNTAIN TEAM: ds@avalancheenduranceevents.com

All volunteers will be granted guest status for the next Fan Dance event and will receive food and drink on the day. Directing Staff will also be happy to write a personal reference stating you have worked alongside former Special Forces personel.
